The goal was to turn a 30' x 40' room into a cave...

inexpensively.

#1 Answer - Brown Paper

 Cave Room

We got a lot of brown paper donated. Crumpled it up and covered the walls with it.

We then spray painted the paper with black and gray.

To add interest, we used some plastic material for basement sub flooring. (Although we got some feedback that says this looks like Lego blocks. Hmm... maybe another theme...)

To conserve paper, we used some black fabric we already had to make an opening deeper into the cave on one wall. We used crumpled-but-not-so-textured paper on a wall and drew "cave paintings" on another wall. The "paintings" are based on the artwork of Annie Vallotton. We used sidewalk chalk for the drawings but they're hard to see. I'd recommend oil pastels for more vibrant color.

For the ceiling, we used more brown paper torn into stalactites.

Other touches included hanging bllack fabric from the door,  a huge rock (made out of pink foam for our Easter play, and more brown paper on the puppet stage.

This is what it looked like before we added the lights:

And here is an idea of what it looks like with the special effects lights on.

What we haven't added yet are lanterns, bats, and stalagmites (orange cones covered in more brown paper).

The paper, paint, lanterns and bats were donated. The black fabric, lights, sidewalk chalk, and large foam rock we had on hand. We paid aout $30 for the lego-like stuff and that was our only expense. Goal Achieved!

What is a Teknologist? PDF Print E-mail

The word "teknology" is a combination of the Greek word "teknon" and the English word "technology." A "teknologist" is therefore someone who studies and practices teknology.

Perfectly clear? I guess you should have paid attention in those ancient Greek classes you never took.

A teknon is a child. It is also used as an affectionate term for a disciple. In my case, I am concerned with making disciples of children.
Technology is the vehicle I use to do that. Technology is a key aspect of children's culture in the United States (as well as elsewhere). It is a highly effective tool for capturing kids' attention and helping them learn.

So what is a Teknologist? It's someone who applies technology to disciple kids.

Making Your Slide Show Start the Way You Want It To. PDF Print E-mail

Most things in PowerPoint can be done in at least three different ways. Starting your slide show is no exception. Actually, there are at least six ways you can start you slide show but they fall into two categories: stating it from the beginning and starting it from the current slide.

Starting from the beginning

This is probably the most normal way to start a PowerPoint: Slide 1.  Whether you powerpoint has 2 slides or two hundred, this will start you with the very first slide. To do this you can

1. Hit the "F5" key on your keyboard.

-OR-

2. Click the "Slide Show" tab. Then click "From Beginning" on the tab that brings up (It's all the way to the left).

-OR-

3. Click the "View" tab. Then click "Slide Show" on the tab that brings up.

Starting from the current slide

This generally helpful in two situations. One is when you have somehow exited the slideshow during a presentation and need to continue it from where you left off (I reccemond you NEVER exit during a presentation!). The other is when you are desiging your presentation and you want to look at it live from a particular point. To do this you can

1. Hold down the "Shift" key and press "F5" on your keyboard.

-OR-

2. Click the "Slide Show" tab. Then click "From Current Slide" on the tab that brings up (It's most of the way to the left).

-OR-

3.  Click the icon in the lower-right corner of the screen that looks like a portable projection screen.

PPT 2007 Tabs PDF Print E-mail

The most obvious difference in PowerPoint 2007 over earlier versions is the change from a menu system to a tab system. While this has it's advantages, it can be confusing.

When you start powerpoint, you will probably see these tabs: Home, Insert, Animations, Slide Show, Review, View, and Add Ins. Depending on your settings and whether or not you have any add ins installed, you may have more tabs than this but these are the basics.

All of the buttons and icons below these tabs will change depending on what tab you have selected. By default, you will start with the Home tab selected. This has many of the most commonly used options on it. If you don't see the button you need or if it seemed to "disappear," chances are you changed to a different tab. In this case, try clicking "Home" first. If you don't see what you need there, click through the other tabs until you see what you are looking for.

Tabs are just a different way to show what most Windows programs use menus for. Take some time to click through the different tabs to familiarize yourself with the way they look. That'll make it easier to find things later. Eventually, you'll get used to where things are and you won't have to hunt so much.
